UPDATED: Local summer festivals

The 2007 version of the Lebanon Fireman's Picnic was well attended, as witnessed by the crowds that lined the streets for the parades.
Nearly two dozen major community events will keep residents and the interested occupied, all free to attend, as summer sun and cabin fever gradually call everyone out of their homes.

Though June may be under way, events are coming and going on even now.

July

- Patriots in the Park in Wilson Park in Granite City July 2 to July 6. July 2 starting at 6 p.m. Each other day it will begin at 8 a.m. Events and rides opening up at 1 p.m. each day. On July 4, a concert at 7 p.m. and fireworks start at 9:15 p.m. Everything shuts down at 11 p.m. each night.

Rides, food and fun for attendees of all ages.

- "Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration" July 4 at Scheve Park in Mascoutah. Will feature rides, food and games and a fireworks display at 9 p.m. on July 4.

- Maryville hosts Fireman's Homecoming July 11 and 12 in Fireman's Park. Will feature rides, games and food.

- Lebanon hosts the Fireman's Picnic beginning at 5 p.m., parades at 7 p.m each day and lasting until midnight in Horner Park on the same dates.

- Collinsville will be busy with the Catsup Bottle Festival starting at 10 a.m. both days and ends at 9 p.m. Saturday, July 12, and 5 p.m. Sunday, July 13, at the American Legion Post 365 at 1022 Vandalia St.

- On the same dates, Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site will host a juried art event, the Choctaw Indian Art show with American Indian style art, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Attendees can view and buy art.

- The Madison County Fair in Highland from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. July 20 to 25 near Lindenthal Park. Event parking costs $5 but attendance is free. Attendees can see farm animals, tractor pulls and more, expressing the county's agricultural history.

August

- Mascoutah Homecoming, beginning Aug. 1 to Aug. 3. Focuses on the city's agricultural experience, including animal judging, farm animals, food and rides.

Starting and ending times are still tentative.

- St. Clair County Fair Aug. 5 to Aug. 9. Food, farm animals, exhibitions and more featured.

It begins at 5 p.m. each day, ending at 10 p.m. for exhibits in the exposition building and midnight for exhibits outside.

- Fairview Heights hosts "Salute to the Masters" Aug. 23 and 24 in Moody Park, formerly known as Longacre Park. Features a juried art show.

It opens to the public beginning at 10 a.m. and ending at 6 p.m. Aug. 23; and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 24.

September

- Collinsville hosting the Italian Fest Sept. 19 and 20 downtown. Focuses on the many aspects of Italian American heritage, including food, music and more. Starting and ending times for the festival are still tentative.

- Scott Air Force Base showcases American air power at its 2008 Air Show, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Sept. 20 and 21.
