Festival of Faiths and Cultures coming to Shrine
The event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday in and around the Visitor's Center will allow attendees to learn about religions and cultures from around the world. "The festival aims to celebrate people from all sorts of backgrounds," said Tina Huck, the Shrine's event coordinator.Food vendors will be among the event highlights, with African, Argentinian, Cajun, Creole, Caribbean, Chinese, Columbian, Filipino, German, Japanese, Mexican, Taiwanese, Thai and American foods available for purchase. Education on different religious traditions will be a major goal of the event. "We have people from all different faiths, whether it be Hindu, Buddhist, Christianity ... displaying different aspects about their religions here in the Visitor's Center," said Chris Diel, marketing manager at the Shrine. The festival will be free of religious proselytizing, making learning about other religions an entirely academic exercise. Religious represented include: Islam; Mormonism; Roman Catholicism; Church of Christ, Scientist; Eastern Orthodoxy; Buddhism; Baha'i, Hinduism; Native American religion; Judaism and others. Stage performances from different religious and cultural groups will be on the outdoor and indoor stages of the event, running throughout the day.
